She does have a helmet! it is awesome and it totally does not fit her yet. So we just go without. We got an XS nutcase helmet that has one of the smaller minimum head sizes, but it really still is too big, even though her head is a bit bigger than the minimum size. Next time we get her in a bike shop we will try, but we usually just do neighborhood rides, so no helmet. When I start doing group rides with her in the chariot, you can bet she will have a helmet.
We did use the infant sling extensively walking and jogging before we started riding, now that she is strong like ox we put her in the chariot with the infant support ( I think the older version) and go to town... We have two chariots now as elena wanted to shop with her and we got a double cheap from a friend, so we have one for walk/jog and the double for bike/shopping. She doesn't use any supports in the single, but uses the head support for the double.
Anyway, I think we just decided to go for it and we would rather get out there than worry about it. She is not going to fall out of the chariot... We have one of those bobike child seats that sits on the top tube that I think she could use, but I don't think I am going to put her in that without a helmet as the bike could be dropped and then she might need the helmet. If you are really worried about it, just stick her in a car seat in the trailer...
seeing the trailer reminded us - we want to ask your advice on baby + bike. I see some thoughts in your response here, but we need to start with the very basics - when can they start in what kinds of bike conveyances ... given that we'd be biking in Cambridge, which isn't very safe, really.
Alison, The conventional wisdome is do not start them in bike trailers or child seats until they can hold their head up on their own and with a helmet on. In reality, lots of child trailers have infant coddling devices that are like hammocks, so you can start whenever, as long as you ignore the helmet bit. I think with child seats on bikes you should probably wait as they could fall when the bike falls or is knocked over, so helmets are probably more useful. I think most of he jog/bike strollers reccomend at least 9 months, maybe a year. I think this is silly for reasons stated above, but if you are worried, lots of people put their car seats IN their bike trailer and go from there. Then they are in an envelope of protection that probably is safer than a helmet for them. I like the child seats that mount on the top tube rather than rear rack ones for ease of baby interaction, but I have only used one once with some other kid.

Let me know if you have specific questions.
